One of Van Gogh's most famous paintings, Café Terrace on the Place du Forum,
painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1888 at Arles, measures 80.7 cm x 65.3 cm and is
currently in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands. It is his first
oil painting of the starry sky and one of his most iconic works. Café Terrace on the Place du Forum also
profoundly influenced Post-Impressionism and later art. It was not
well-received at the time, not because of its quality but simply because the
times could not keep up with Van Gogh's style.
"Night is more vivid and colorful than day." Van Gogh amazingly discovered this with the invention of the gas lump in the
19th century. Painted on a sultry September evening, Café Terrace on the Place du Forum depicts a relaxed and peaceful
outdoor view of the café. A bright
yellow light is spilling over the cobblestoned square. Some people sit around
the café tables, and some follow the reflection of the light on the
cobblestones, along the path into the depth of the painting for a walk.
Van Gogh loved to paint in yellow. In this painting,
bright yellow lights illuminate the shop walls, streets, and crowds. The warm
light is so dazzling that even the stars in the night sky are tainted with it. Van Gogh painted the stars in the sky with just a few strokes. The deep blue
sky and the warm yellow color set off each other to a harmonious and quiet
picture. The strokes of dark blue are dyed around, the blue then gradually
fades, and the strokes are crisscrossed, creating a star-filled effect. The
dark houses and trees on the right contrast with the bright café on the left.
The ground is painted with different shades, and the pebbles appear to be mauve
against the blue sky. The café's guests and the white-clad waiters form a
contrasting color. The entire scene is serene and comfortable.
More than 100 years after Van Gogh completed the painting, the cafe continued to be a place where people drank and is now known as Van Gogh's café, still with the yellow canopy and all. Around the café, people come and go from the street, exchanging conversations with each other. This is probably Van Gogh's ideal life, a life like an ordinary person, walking with his family, talking and laughing with his friends in a café.

The simple composition and uncommon proportion of the canvas were chosen to magnify the painting as a landscape, and this also contrasts with the complexity of the vivid and thick brush strokes. The sky is peacefully portrayed only in shades of blues and takes up about two-thirds of the canvas. The clouds gather, almost spiraling, in the top left corner and are not pure white. They gradually darken as they touch the horizon on the right side of the painting. Van Gogh was able to softly paint the movement of the breeze in the day-time sky.
The painter was able to portray depth in the wheat field as Vincent van Gogh uses the sense of the paint stroke to his advantage. Using mainly greens and yellows, he separates the fields in sections and eludes to a perspective, directing the viewer's eyes to the horizon. He breaks the color pallet with speaks of red, representing possibly some flowers that grew mixed in the field, as they are complementary to the sky.
The artist painted around a dozen artworks with this same landscape, as he was intensely drawn to nature's purity. This love for landscapes can be seen as an influence of the Realist artists, as they would often portray rural workers and their harsh life in the fields. This view on manual labor is not only a social statement but also can be seen connected to religious work, in the sense of spiritual guidance. Vincent van Gogh had a strong religious background, wanting to become a priest when younger. This divine aspect can be seen in this series as well as in most of his work.
